My playing style is more Kim Deal or Peter Hook than Flea or Jaco.
I'm open to and appreciate a lot of different musical styles, but I especially enjoy:
- 80s "College Rock" / 90s "Alternative" : New Wave, Post-Punk, Punk, Garage, Jangle Pop, Alt-Rock, Grunge
- Electronic : Synth-pop, Electropop, EDM, House, UK Garage, Trance, Trip-hop
- Americana : Indie Folk, Alt Country, Classic Country, Rockabilly
- Un-ironically love : Ska, Swing, Reggae, Glam, New Romantic, Bubblegum Pop, Art Rock, Baroque Pop, Minneapolis Funk, New Jack Swing
Here are some examples of artists that I love and whose songs I've learned to play (listed alphabetically): The Avalanches, Animal Collective, Bell Biv DeVoe, Camper Van Beethoven, Can, Courtney Barnett, Cowboy Junkies, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crystal Castles, The Cure, David Bowie, Franz Ferdinand, The Go! Team, Gorillaz, Hank Williams Sr., Hole, The Housemartins, Indigo Girls, Jackson 5, Jane's Addiction, John Mellencamp, Johnny Cash, Joy Division, The Killers, Mazzy Star, M.I.A., Modest Mouse, N.E.R.D., New Order, Nirvana, Phenomenonal Handclap Band, Pixies, Poi Dog Pondering, Polyphonic Spree, Pretenders, Prince, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, The Replacements, Santigold, The Smiths, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, The Strokes, Talking Heads, Tribe Called Quest, Velvet Underground, Violent Femmes, Woody Guthrie, White Stripes, XTC.
In addition to bass, I have some experience with electronic music production (drum machines, sequencers, samplers, synths, MIDI controllers, loopers), rhythm guitar, and digital recording. I also have an interest in "quirky" instruments like melodica, supplementary percussion, and DIY stuff like circuit bending, stompboxes and "punk consoles", but I'm not really expecting to make use of that in this context.
I don't have any true gigging experience yet, but I have played both for and with others in informal settings. I have a *lot* of practice playing along with recorded music in a realistic fashion as well as solo performances and the occasional multi-track recording.
If it's not obvious from my musical tastes I'm in my mid-40s. I suspect my dad-band tastes and ambition will mostly appeal to other Gen-Xish folks, but I'm not actually that particular about age (older or younger) if the vibe is right and expectations are aligned. ...click to see more
