About me: Drummer wanting to write and record ambient progressive rock/metal
Want to make something to be proud of?
I play drums. I want to find a guitar player, bass player and possibly a keyboard player as well as someone who can sing. I want to write, play and record ambient progressive rock in the style of Porcupine Tree, Opeth (clean-vocal period) and Anathema (later-period). I am not the world’s most accomplished drummer, but I can hold down a beat and handle time changes. I can write and I know what I like. I've been playing music for over thirty years on various instruments, occasionally at a high level and have taken it pretty seriously in the past. However, I know I'm never going to be a rock star and I have made peace with this. I would like to produce something lasting that we can all be proud of and that I would not be ashamed of sharing with my friends and family.
I’m open to playing occasional shows, but this would be primarily a writing and recording project. I’m an old fart. Let’s face it: we’re never going to make any money out of gigs and I don’t want to cripple myself hauling equipment to and from ****ty little bars to play in front of five people on a Thursday evening. I also have a life outside band stuff including my family.
I’m looking for likeminded musicians who should have their own gear and would be interested in rehearsing on a regular cadence, most likely one evening a week. My preference would be to rehearse somewhere on the Eastside, maybe Evolution Studios in Bellevue or similar. I imagine a typical band practice might follow this kind of pattern: warm up with songs we already have for about an hour, work on new stuff for an hour or two after that. I will probably make single-mic recordings of each practice to share for homework purposes. Outside rehearsals, I will practise my parts and would hope you'd be motivated to do the same. I might also work on sketching out arrangements of new songs in my DAW to get song structures tight.
I don't expect to be writing explicitly political material and would want to focus mainly on “the human condition” but I'm not going to be receptive to racist or anti-immigrant jokes and I would consider myself to be LGBTQIA+-friendly.
